Working Overtime to Make the Grade

“Nothing short of a miracle” – Students at Alcoa Elementary School will return from summer break to a school that has nearly been rebuilt. Hickory crews are working around-the-clock to ensure the school is ready for the first day of classes on July 27.

Hickory’s highly specialized work schedule maximizes the seven week window allowed by the school’s summer break. Working seven days a week, in two 10-hour shifts per day, Hickory has choreographed over 150 people to keep demolition and construction on schedule.

Alcoa Elementary is getting a comprehensive update. Classroom pods are being gutted and rebuilt with improved infrastructure and energy efficiency. The school will have a new administrative offices, new kitchen, new heating and air conditioning, a new water sprinkler system and ADA restrooms in every pod.

The major renovations will be completed in time for teachers to move back into their classrooms by July 20. All renovation work is scheduled for completion in December. Architectural design is provided by The Lewis Group Architects.

Handicap accessibility was addressed from the new hand-washing stations to the enlarged theater seating.
