EPA and the New Lead Paint Rule

As of April 22, 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting rule is in effect. The rule addresses remodeling and renovation projects disturbing more than six square feet of potentially contaminated painted surfaces for all residential and multifamily structures built prior to 1978 that are inhabited or frequented by pregnant women or children under the age of six. The EPA rule requires general contractors to register as a Certified Firm and train employees for certification.

While some general contractors are backing away from projects in older buildings, Hickory is moving ahead. The requirements are nothing new to us.
